My moggy for some years answered to a call of Jemmy. Well, if there was food in the offing! She didn't like people very much. Siamese chocolate point cat <i>Phaedra</i> but I don't recall her pedigree name. She had a complex history as she was born in Miama, registered in South Africa (Bloemfontein) and was later brought to England. Shortly after that her owners had to emigrate again and gave their two Siamese to my ex-wife who, when she emigrated, gave this one to me. UB8660 was built as a gully emptier and was purchased new by the City of Leeds Cleansing Department. When it was disposed of it went to Robinson and Birdsell's scrapyard in Leeds where it lay in a pile of scrap but almost complete. It was cut up before it was rescued and the parts were purchased by Tom Varley, who rebuilt it and had it running by 1971. Fowler wagons are unusual in having a compound V-twin engine which is arranged with the high pressure cylinder under the driver's seat and low pressure cylinder under the mate's seat. The gear box provides three speeds and the drive to the rear wheels is by prop-shaft and a worm driven differential gear. The boiler was of the vertical fire tube type, a type that had been abandoned by most wagon manufacturers due to its poor performance compared to the water tube boilers that were being used."</i><br>

Veerse Meer was a wonderful place for bird photography and I wonder if it's still so today. One could park one's car on the roadside verge right next to the water and photograph from the car window whilst the birsd simply took no notice. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this parade of oystercatchers walking sedately past my car window at Borsele in Zeeland. One of the delights of living in Uithoorn (Noord Holland) was that, in most years, the summer brought a flock of spoonbills to a feeding ground only a five minute bike ride from my home. They were very skittish and hard to photograph as a result. A pair of nesting storks snapped by chance in a farmyard somewhere near Schoonhoven (NL). December 1978 and two horse-drawn drays wait patiently outside the Sole Bay Inn in the middle of Southwold, Suffolk, the home of Adnams brewery which is just across the road from this location. One of Dorset's most famous sights is Durdle Door. This delightful oddity was photographed at the end of a display day at Duxford (I think) in 1978 and features a propeller turner which Ken Hunter has kindly informed is a Hucks starter named after it's designer. This example is based on a Ford Model T chassis. Fleetwood Smack. a nice snappy title but probably factually incorrect. Well, it's right-hand drive which isn't unusual if one is British (or Japanese) but this isn't a British vehicle and the picture was taken in torrential rain during the <i>Dortse stoom Weekend</i> in 1983. The vehicle is a preserved Swiss Post Bus all of which were right-hand drive. I can't recall what the occasion was nor even, for certain, where I took it but I'm pretty sure that the location is Cannes circa 1986. Just away from the edge of Veerse Meer in the Netherlands. The windmill at Wilnis (province of Utrecht, Netherlands) and the only working survivor in the Ronde Venen area. De Veenmolen of Korenmolen in Wilnis. De enige nog werkende molen in De Ronde Venen. I was always fascinated by these quite small lift bridges seen in The Netherlands where they commonly provide crossings over <i>sloten</i> (drainage ditches). However, creating an imaginative image of them is something else and one hopes that this effort is successful. Almost cetainly taken in Middelburg with the available light fading rapidly. In early 1980 there was a series of spectacular red sunsets off the coast of Zeeland and I chose the beach at Zoutelande to photograph some of them Bulleid Merchant Navy pacific 35005 'Canadian Pacific' storms Parkstone Bank from a standing start at Poole on February 12th, 2000 Low viewpoint at the end of Dorchester West station whilst awaiting a steam engine. The stats indicate that it's to be seen until mid-September but this specimen ws captured on film on the first Saturday of October 1979 at High Wycombe airfield. A Red Underwing - Catocala nupta - captured on my kitchen window when I lived in Middelburg. The Dutch name - rood weeskind - is more evocative than the English. It means Red orphan.
